First and foremost, it gives me great pleasure to inform everyone, The Royal Langkawi Yacht Club (RLYC) has been awarded ‘Best Asian Marine/Yacht Club of the Year’ at the annual Christofle Asia Boating Awards.
The ceremony, held recently on April 11, 2008 at the prestigious Le Royal Meridien in Shanghai, is known as the region’s premier event, recognising the efforts of boat builders, marinas, clubs and individuals in creating a diverse and exciting boating community. Every one of us at the club is ecstatic and excited about this new achievement. This win marks a major milestone for RLYC; this is the first time a Malaysian yacht club is bestowed the award since it first began.
RLYC was among 10 contenders from all over Asia. Other clubs in the same category were the Dubai International Marine Club, Mina Seyahi (UAE), Gold Coast Yacht and Country Club as well as Hong Kong Marina (Hong Kong), Heritage Bay Club Marina (Malaysia), Qingdao Yinhai International Yacht Club, Shanghai Sameng Sailing Club and Suzhou Mercury Marina from China, Republic of Singapore Yacht Club (Singapore) and Yacht Haven Marina (Thailand).
It is the hard work and dedication of our staff at the yacht club and the loyalty of our members and supporters that has made this possible. To all of us, this award is testament of the tremendous effort and passion we all share in making RLYC an exclusive and world-class establishment. It is an honour of which we are very proud of and a wonderful accolade for Malaysia as well.
As Commodore of RLYC, I have had the pleasure of seeing RLYC grow to an amazing clubhouse and marina. The fully equipped marina, with 24-hour security, comprises of 200 modern berths that can accommodate a variety of vessels. RLYC is strategically located close to the island’s main town and ferry terminal. Because of this proximity, no other club provides excellent access to duty-free shops and business facilities, unlike the RLYC.
RLYC is also home of the world class Royal Langkawi International Regatta, an annual event hosted by the club, since its inception way back in 2003. Through this event, I have had the pleasure of meeting many sailors from around the world, many of whom are always eager to share their traveling experiences and their love for sailing with me. It is always good to see new faces each year during the week long regatta, but it is greater to see familiar faces making their way back to the island, especially to the club, to appreciate the sport and the wonderful facilities the club has to offer.
Langkawi comprises some of the most beatiful islands in this world. Overlooking the Andaman Sea and Indian Ocean, it is truly an archipelago rich in heritage and beauty. Langkawi is famous for its spectacular display of mountains, fascinating landscapes, white glittering beaches, tropical rain forest, and protected waters that boosts a wealth of marine life. One cannot talk in length about Langkawi without touching on it’s tale of myths and legends of ogres, warriors, fairies, battles and romance. This is why many refer to Langkawi as the Isles of Legends.
I truly believe that Langkawi has the potential to be the premier destination for sailing, tourism and a host of many other activities in this region. With this in mind, RLYC will continue to host the Royal Langkawi International Regatta to achieve this goal.
To all our guests, patrons and friends, I wish you happy sailing and kind seas.
