The Royal Langkawi Yacht Club is a premier yachting and sailing club which was opened in 1996 by YAM Tunku Tan Sri Abdullah of Melewar Group.
RLYC is situated on the mystical island of Langkawi in the north of the peninsular along Malaysia’s western coastline. It is a part of the state of Kedah.
Access to Langkawi is either by boat or air. From Peninsular Malaysia, many choose to drive or take a bus to the jetty in Kuala Kedah. The ferry service takes about 1 ½ hours to get from the mainland to the island’s jetty point in Kuah town. Langkawi also has an international airport on the west of the island in Padang Matsirat. Malaysia’s national carrier Malaysia Airlines and the budget airline of Air Asia fly daily in and out of Langkawi from KLIA and the LCCT in Sepang, Selangor. Malaysia Airlines and Silk Air (Singapore) fly directly to Langkawi twice weekly. Most international airlines to Malaysia land in KLIA and from there, visitors can take connecting flights to Langkawi.
There are two main restaurants. Charlie’s Place is a bar and restaurant which is on the ground level of the club and is built along the shoreline. Charlie’s Place serves Malaysian as well as a selection of Western dishes. The Captain’s Deck Restaurant is on the second floor of the main clubhouse building and serves a more eclectic selection of international fare.
RLYC is mainly a marina and offers 200 berths for boats of all sizes including six berths for mega yachts. Boats berthed at RLYC have access to:
Apart from the restaurants, RLYC has the Hocus Pocus which consists of The Boatique, which sells souvernirs, general items and duty-free wine and liquor. Guests may also book tours through RLYC or charter yachts from Simpson Marine, Sunsail, Blue Water Star Sailing and East Marine, all of whom have offices within the club premises.
Probably the biggest event at RLYC is the Royal Langkawi International Regatta. Organised as an annual event since 2003, this regatta has attracted some of the biggest names in international yacht racing and sailing.
Just across the waters from RLYC is Pulau Dayang Bunting (Pregnant Maiden Island). This island has a fresh water lake in the centre in which visitors can swim with the fish. It’s surrounding ocean offers pristine beach. There are also many things to do on the main Langkawi and visitors can take a 7-minute walk to Kuah town for some duty free shopping of chocolates, liquor and cigarettes. Or some of the funkiest batik beachwear and casual wear around.
Driving is the easiest way to see the island in your own time. Visitors can rent motobikes, cars or vans at the number of rental outlets situated at the Jetty Point in Kuah or at the Langkawi International Airport. Roads in Langkawi are safe and well mapped out. Alternatively, there are taxis in the shape of minivans which can seat about seven people at a time and the drivers are very knowledgeable about the island and its attractions.
